Welcome to Gilbert White’s House & Garden and The Oates Collection. Come and enjoy a special day out at this fascinating and most original museum commemorating important individuals in the exploration of the natural world, set in an historic village in beautiful countryside. Guests are free to come and go as often as they please that day. View the House and Museum, go for a walk around the delightful gardens and through the Park to see the follies, take tea in the Parlour and shop in the old billiard room. Time and energy permitting, walk up the famous Gilbert White’s Zig Zag path through the hanging beech woods, return and tour the grounds. Or just sit and look at one of the most delightful views in the South of England.
Interactive galleries tell the moving story of Antarctic Hero Captain Lawrence Oates, who travelled the epic journey of discovery to the South Pole in 1911-12 with Captain Scott. He is remembered for his tremendous courage when sacrificing his life in the hope of saving his comrades when he walked out into a severe blizzard uttering the famous last words
“I am just going outside and may be some time”.
Leave Faversham at 10.00am and drive to Jane Austen home in Alton. Chawton House. This inspiring Hampshire cottage was Jane Austen’s home and the birthplace of her six beloved novels. Today it is an independent museum celebrating her life, works and legacy.
