Staying in The BEAR INN in town centre.
Thought to date back to 1559 The Bear Hotel has a long and fascinating history and is a true landmark in the market town of Devizes. As well as so much to explore on our doorstep including the Wadworth Brewery Tap & Shop, Caen hill locks and Devizes Castle, we’re located just 25 minutes drive from Stonehenge and 50 minutes from the Roman city of Bath, making us the ideal place to stay in Wiltshire. All single occupancy rooms with breakfast included.
Just a short distance from our hotel is:
The Caen Hill Locks in Devizes, Wiltshire, England, consist of 29 locks on the Kennet and Avon Canal. These locks span a distance of 2 miles (3.2 km) and have a total rise of 237 feet. The locks are divided into three groups: the lower seven locks, Foxhangers Wharf Lock to Foxhangers Bridge Lock, are spread over 3⁄4 mile (1.2 km); the next sixteen locks form a steep flight in a straight line up the hillside and are designated as a scheduled monument. Due to the steep terrain, the pounds between these locks are very short, and fifteen of them have unusually large sideways-extended pounds to store the water needed for operation. The final six locks take the canal into Devizes. These impressive locks are considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Waterways and showcase a true triumph of Georgian engineering.
