Highlight will be travelling on ‘The Bernina Express’, one of Europe’s best train journeys. A direct train from Chur to Tirano in Italy, in just 4 hours, you’ll see stunning variations in the landscape, from high alpine scenery on the Bernina Pass to a Mediterranean atmosphere in the Poschiavo valley just before Tirano.

Crossing the Alps in the Bernina Express certainly is one of the most spectacular ways to do it. Along the way, the Bernina Express rolls Hollywood-style over the 65-metre-high Landwasser Viaduct, the signature structure of the Rhaetian Railway and the UNESCO World Heritage site. Altogether the train passes through 55 tunnels and over 196 bridges on its way from Chur to Tirano. Travellers are treated to marvellous sights during their journey, like the Montebello curve with a view of the Bernina massif, the Morteratsch glacier, the three lakes Lej Pitschen, Lej Nair and Lago Bianco, the Alp Grüm and the Brusio Circular Viaduct. In summer, the journey can be extended from Tirano to Lugano aboard the Bernina Express Bus.

We will fly into Friedrichshafen (Germany) and transfer to Switzerland. Stay 4 nights in Chur, Switzerland.

Chur is the oldest town in Switzerland and has a settlement history of over 5,000 years. The historic Old Town, one of the best preserved in Switzerland, is completely car-free. It offers a surprisingly large range of cultural activities, shopping, cafes, restaurants and bars. One of the Must Do’s is the cable car (Chur – Brambruesch).

Our stay is in Hotel Stern Chur. The Hotel Stern Chur is a historic, 360 years old hotel in the centre of Chur. The Veltliner Weinstube zum Stern serves typical Swiss cuisine. Free private parking is available on site.

Rooms at the Stern Hotel feature a TV, a safety box, and a private bathroom.

Depending on the weather and upon prior request, a pick-up from the train station with an Oldtimer Buick is offered.

Guests have access to the rooftop terrace of the hotel on the third floor.

It is 1,550 yards to the cable car to the Brambrüesch Mountain, and 12.4 miles to the Flims/Laax Ski Region. The village of Maienfeld, the setting of Heidi, is 10.6 miles away.

On Thursday morning we board the Bernina Express . 4 hrs of fabulous sightseeing.

Disembark in Tirano (Italy) and take the Express bus back across the border to Lugano (Switzerland), staying 2 nights, before transferring to Milan airport (Italy) for flight  home.

Lugano, this Italian speaking town is the largest in the holiday region of Ticino, a town of parks and flowers, villas and sacred buildings. Lying in a bay on the northern side of Lake Lugano, surrounded by numerous mountains offering splendid viewpoints. The traffic-free historic town centre, the numerous buildings in Italianate Lombardy style, the exclusive museums, the mountains, lake and a packed calendar of events all invite visitors to see the sights, soak up the atmosphere – and enjoy “dolce far niente”. Thanks to its mild climate, Lugano is a popular tourist destination in the spring when the camellias are in bloom.
